Florian Wirtz Nets 2 On His Champions League Debut In 4 0 Win For Leverkusen

Florian Wirtz nets 2 on his Champions League debut in 4-0 win for Leverkusen

Wirtz became the youngest German to score in the Champions League

Bayer Leverkusen thrashed Celtic 4-0 in their Champions League group stage opener, with Florian Wirtz scoring twice on his debut in the competition.

The 18-year-old Wirtz became the youngest German to score in the Champions League, and his goals helped Leverkusen to a comfortable win over the Scottish champions.

Leverkusen took the lead in the 16th minute when Wirtz scored a penalty after he was fouled by Celtic defender Christopher Jullien.

Wirtz doubled Leverkusen's lead in the 59th minute with a fine finish from the edge of the area, and Moussa Diaby and Patrik Schick added further goals in the 87th and 90th minutes respectively.

The win moves Leverkusen to the top of Group G, while Celtic are bottom of the group after their defeat to Ferencvaros on matchday one.

What did Wirtz say after the match?

"It was a dream debut for me," said Wirtz. "I'm so happy to have scored two goals and helped the team to a win."

"It's a special feeling to score in the Champions League, and I'm proud to be the youngest German to do so.

"We played really well tonight and created a lot of chances. We could have scored more goals, but I'm happy with the 4-0 win."

What did Leverkusen coach Gerardo Seoane say about Wirtz?

"Florian is a special player," said Seoane. "He's only 18 years old, but he has the quality to play at the highest level.

"He showed tonight what he can do, and I'm confident that he will continue to develop into a top player.

"He's a great addition to our team, and I'm looking forward to working with him in the future."

What's next for Leverkusen?

Leverkusen will host Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga on Saturday, before they travel to Celtic Park for the return fixture in the Champions League on September 28.

Celtic will be looking to bounce back from their defeat to Leverkusen when they host Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday.
