A first look at the major exhibition opening at the National Gallery of Australia

2 Mar–21 Jul 2024

A major exhibition of acclaimed Western Aranda artist Vincent Namatjira opens at the National Gallery of Australia on 2 March 2024. The exhibition will showcase Namatjira's vibrant and evocative paintings, which explore his deep connection to his ancestral lands and culture.

Namatjira, the great-grandson of renowned watercolourist Albert Namatjira, is one of the most celebrated Indigenous artists in Australia today. His paintings have been exhibited in major galleries around the world, and his work is held in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and the Museum of Contemporary Art.

The exhibition at the National Gallery of Australia will feature over 60 of Namatjira's paintings, including works from his early career to the present day. The exhibition will also include a number of new works that have never been seen before.

The exhibition is curated by Glenn Barkley, Senior Curator of Indigenous Art at the National Gallery of Australia. Barkley said that the exhibition is a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the work of one of Australia's most talented artists."

"Vincent Namatjira is a master storyteller," Barkley said. "His paintings are full of life, energy, and humour. They celebrate the beauty of the Australian landscape and the rich culture of the Western Aranda people."

The exhibition will be open to the public from 2 March to 21 July 2024. Admission is free.
